Oral surgery that first of all preserves the tooth

Modern oral surgery is more about restoring and preserving the tooth than extracting it. The aim is to stop the inflammation, remove sources of infection and even restore the look of the smile. Only when the tooth cannot be saved do we extract it.

What oral surgery includes

Oral surgery means operations in the mouth and on the jaw. At our clinic it can involve three things.

Tooth-preserving surgery
We remove cysts, perform root-end resection (apicoectomy) and root amputation, or operate for periodontal disease, so that the infection goes but the tooth stays.
Tooth extraction
We extract a tooth only when other options are not enough, and try to damage the surrounding tissue as little as possible.
Wisdom teeth
We recommend having them removed early, when they have just started to come through and cause trouble.

We also do gum grafting, prepare for implants with sinus lifts and bone grafting, and place implants. We go through the full price list at your visit.

How wisdom tooth surgery works

This is what happens when a wisdom tooth is to be removed.

  1. Examination and X-ray

The dentist examines you. An X-ray shows how the roots lie.

  2. Simple or surgical extraction

Simple extraction with forceps, if the tooth has come through. Otherwise an incision is made in the gum and the tooth is removed in pieces.

  3. Anaesthesia

Local anaesthesia, so that you feel no pain. If you are anxious, you can have sedation.

  4. After the procedure

Stitches and antiseptic treatment of the wound if needed.

Common questions about oral surgery

Can’t find the answer? Call us on 08-650 10 60.

Does it hurt?

All operations are done under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. If you are anxious, the dentist can also use sedation. You are still awake and can answer the dentist’s questions, and you come out of the calm state quickly.

Should I have my wisdom tooth removed?

Wisdom teeth usually serve no function but often become a source of problems. They are hard to keep clean and can cause cavities, gum inflammation and infections, especially if they have not come through. They can also contribute to crowding of the teeth in adult life.

That is why our dentists recommend removing them as early as possible, once they have started to come through and cause problems. With age it can become harder.

How do I care for the wound after an extraction?

The dentist gives you detailed advice. In general, put an ice pack against your cheek for 10–15 minutes at a time during the first hours, do not rinse your mouth for the first 24 hours, and do not smoke, drink alcohol or use a straw. Eat soft, lukewarm food and chew on the other side. Start rinsing with salt water the day after the procedure.

All advice for before and after the procedure is collected on the page advice after tooth extraction.

What should I do if it bleeds or swells afterwards?

Contact us by phone or come to the clinic if you have bleeding, fever or increased swelling. We provide emergency care and advice to our patients.

Can anyone have a tooth extracted at your clinic?

Not everyone. For example, with disease of the heart and blood vessels, kidneys, liver or pancreas, disease of the central nervous system or an acute infection, we refer you to a specialist clinic at a hospital. That is why we go through your health before the procedure.
