Prosthodontics for damaged or missing teeth

With a dental prosthesis we can quickly restore the shape of a tooth, improve its appearance and make chewing work again, or replace lost teeth completely. The dentist decides which type suits you after the check-up. If the tooth roots are healthy, it usually means a crown, bridge or veneer. If the root is permanently damaged, a denture or an implant may be the solution.

Fixed prosthetics: crowns, bridges, inlays and veneers

Fixed prosthetics stay in the mouth and are brushed like normal teeth.

Crown
Fits like a cap over the ground-down tooth when more than half of it is destroyed.
Bridge
Replaces two or more teeth in a row. Sits on your own teeth or on implants.
Ceramic inlay
Restores the chewing surface when 30–40 percent of the tooth is destroyed.
Veneer
A thin ceramic shell that corrects small irregularities and discolouration on front teeth.

Lifespan depends on the material and oral hygiene.

Materials for crowns and bridges

We choose the material according to your needs, wishes and circumstances.

Zirconia
The most durable material. Lets light through like a natural tooth, can reduce temperature sensitivity and is antibacterial. More expensive than the others.
Ceramic
Natural-looking and hypoallergenic. Can chip or crack under damage or teeth grinding. Lasts about 10 years on average.
Porcelain fused to metal
Durable and affordable, but we hardly use it. The metal can show and cause allergy. Lasts 10–12 years on average.

Common questions about crowns, bridges and dentures

How long do crowns and bridges last?

It depends on the material, on your oral hygiene and on following the dentist’s advice. On average, porcelain fused to metal lasts 10–12 years and ceramic about 10 years, and with proper care often longer. Zirconia is the most durable material.

Does the tooth have to be ground down for a crown or veneer?

Yes. The tooth is ground down so that the crown or veneer can fit tightly. For a veneer it is 0.3–1 mm. Before a bridge on your own teeth, the teeth are ground down, and sometimes the nerve has to be removed.

What is the difference between a fixed and a removable denture?

A fixed prosthesis is brushed directly in the mouth like normal teeth. A removable denture is taken out for cleaning. After a bridge, special oral hygiene is needed for it to last a long time.

When is a removable denture suitable?

For example when all teeth are missing, when a fixed prosthesis cannot be made or if you are allergic to metal. It also suits you if implants are not possible, for example with diabetes, severe gum inflammation or heart disease, or as a temporary solution until the permanent one is ready.

A partial denture is attached to your remaining teeth, and a full acrylic denture replaces all the teeth in a jaw. It can be held by suction or on implants, for example all-on-four.

Which type of denture suits me, and is there a guarantee?

The dentist decides after the check-up, once the condition of the tooth roots has been assessed. We give up to three years’ guarantee on the prosthetic material.
