Periodontics for when your gums are unwell

Gum problems are almost as common as problems with the teeth themselves. Most often they are caused by poor oral hygiene or poor-quality dental work. Hormonal changes, cancer, diabetes and weak blood vessel walls can also contribute. Healthy gums are also the foundation for cosmetic dentistry, dentures, implants and orthodontics.

How to recognise gingivitis and periodontitis

Swollen or bleeding gums, bad breath, loose teeth or exposed tooth roots can point to one of these diseases.

Gingivitis
A superficial inflammation of the outer layer of the mucous membrane and of the gums between the teeth.
Periodontitis
The inflammation goes deeper and reaches the ligaments that hold the tooth in the jawbone.
Gum pocket
A cavity where tartar, plaque and bacteria collect. The inflammation thins the jawbone so that teeth can come loose.

Periodontitis can be treated well at an early stage.

Common questions about periodontics

Can’t find the answer? Call us on 08-650 10 60.

When should I book an appointment?

Book if you have swollen or bleeding gums, sensitivity to cold and hot, bad breath, loose teeth, exposed tooth roots or deposits on your teeth. It could be an ongoing inflammation.

Chronic gum inflammation can cause few symptoms, so regular check-ups are the surest way to find it early.

How is gum recession treated?

With recession, the tooth root is exposed. This can make teeth sensitive and increase the risk of cavities, and left untreated it can, in the worst case, lead to the tooth being lost.

We use gum grafting, where gum tissue is removed or built up with a soft tissue graft.

Can gum disease be prevented?

Yes. The best protection is professional oral hygiene with a dental hygienist twice a year and regular check-ups. If you have already been treated, you need to follow up on the result so that the inflammation does not come back.

Does the treatment hurt?

Operations, such as periodontal surgery, are done under local anaesthesia. If you are anxious, our dentist can use sedation.

We go through how ordinary gum disease treatment feels with you before we begin.

Can gum disease lead to teeth having to be extracted?

Yes, if the inflammation is not stopped in time. The pockets then fill with tartar, plaque and bacteria, the jawbone becomes thinner and teeth can come loose and have to be extracted. That is why it helps to get help early.
